The Unsung Hero
Being a kicker is a hard job. Not only do you have to have a good foot, you have to have a good tolerance to being picked on. From what i have seen, kickers tend to be the one that gets picked on the most. Not only that, some do not think they are players, only because they only take 3 or 4 snaps per game. Only because they do not have to take as much punishment as the other players. Maybe its also because they wear two different shoes during the game...
People believe that a kicker gets paid a lot of money just to kick the ball, but if you actually watch a kicker, you know that there is more to it than just that. Not only do they have to master the art of kicking 50+ yards, but they also have to know how to run fast, throw accurate, and tackle. If you watch a good NFL or NCAA game, pay attention to the kicker, you will notice that a kicker will have to do one of those things during a game...guaranteed.
The kicker always need some love...but they only seem to get it when they make that game-winning kick to win the big game. Aside from that, a kicker never seems to get the attention they deserve. Who does the couch turn to when the offense can not score? The kicker. Who does the team depend on to make that 50 yard game winner with only 3 seconds left? The kicker. After seeing what the kicker actually does, don't you think that they deserve more attention than what they actually get?
In conclusion, the kicker is a valuable asset to any team, no matter if it is on the high-school or pro level. So when you are watching your favorite team play, pay attention to the kicker and realize how important they really are, because without them, who knows who the game would be.
